Alextravaganza 2014! Selection

Click here for the English version.

They made me happy & happiness is key to birthdays“. Absolut richtig.

Zum Beispiel A Big Boy Did It And Ran Away von Christopher Brookmyre oder The Creative License von Danny Gregory.

The selection

I am so glad I got more than 42 recommendations for my Alextravaganza 2014! Picking out the „winners“ wasn’t easy, but I am very scientifically minded and used scholarly methods to whittle the big list of books down to 42.

Here’s how I did it: I checked for availability, and then weeded out books that are out of print and/or exceedingly expensive. Books I wouldn’t normally want to read, and in fact would cringe away from, made it on the list – for example Narziss und Goldmund by Hermann Hesse, recommended by my sister in law. As I mainly read English books, I chose practically all of the suggested German books.

If different books by one author were suggested, I chose one, as was the case with John Irving and Douglas Adams. I picked Dirk Gently over The Hitchhiker’s Guide purely because I’ve read THG more often than DG.

I actively avoided books I’d otherwise read, or books I usually read. Eloisa James for example recommended the Kate Daniels books by Ilona Andrews, saying „They made me happy & happiness is key to birthdays“ – which is absolutely true, but they are in my heavy rotation reading list, so they just aren’t right for Alextravaganza 2014. (But I just might read all of them before alextravaganting, just to get my reading juices flowing, so to speak.)

Three books I already own were recommended, and they made the selection, purely to save a bit of money.

And there you have it – the final list for Alextravaganza 2014!
