Alextravaganza 2014!

Click here for the English version.

I’ve started a Pinterest board with all the suggested books; and also attached the list at the bottom of the text for anybody who isn’t using Pinterest.

Wer 50 Shades of Grey vorschlägt, fliegt  raus.

Alextravaganza 2014!

I started blogging in 2009. First for work, then I started my private blog. Blogging for myself was shockingly hard at first, but then I challenged myself: I’d blog, every day, in the 37 days leading up to my 37th birthday. I called it „Alextravaganza“. Yes, I am that hilarious. It was hard work, but it was incredibly satisfaying, and I still think I wrote some of my best blog posts during that time.

Looking back, I am even more surprised at how much I enjoy reading what I wrote back then, because I was in a very dark place at the time. Blogging helped me get through it.

Right now I am nowhere near as depressed as in 2009, but I feel like I’ve lost my blogging spark, and it coincides with finding myself in a reading rut.  Reading and writing have always been intertwined for me, so I’ve challenged myself again (and you!): I’ll read 42 books, recommended by you. And I’ll blog about it. Going all out on the creative front I am calling it „Alextravaganza 2014“.

Please suggest books in either German or English – my other languages would buckle under the strain of reading an actual book.

If I get a recommendation for a book I know and liked, I will re-read that book. If I get a recommendation for a book I read more than once and hated every time, I will NOT re-read that book. Ain’t nobody got time for that. If you recommend 50 Shades of Grey, you get disqualified.

I am hoping to read books that I wouldn’t have chosen myself, so don’t be shy, tell me about your weird book loves.  And if you are an author, feel free to blow your own horn and recommend your own books!

If you want, you can tell me why you chose a certain book/books.

Put your suggestions in the comments, send them on Facebook, Twitter or via E-Mail (kontakt@alexandrapreis.de). Make sure to send them in before my birthday (October 23rd).

I’ll collect all recommendations, and if there are more than 42 books I’ll let randomizer.org decide.

Pleasegoddon’tlettherebelessthan42.

6 Gedanken zu „Alextravaganza 2014!

  1. Hallo Alexandra!!!

  2. Hmm. Tricky. Given which birthday it is, I am sorely tempted to recommend something by Douglas Adams…

Tell you what – if you can’t get hold of the wonderful One Fine Day in the Middle of the Night by Christopher Brookmyre, then you can have Mr A’s Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency to fall back on. Viel Glück! 🙂

  3. Hello Alexandra my loyal follower. I feal terrible I have hopped over to your blog several times and only today realized you had the option to read it in English.
Well I am here now. So I have a recommendation for you. I am a huge reader but rarely read the same book twice my recommnendation is the one and only book I have read twice, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith. It is story of a young girl coming of age in a depression era Brooklyn N.Y. Actually this post makes me think it may be time for a re-read. I warn you it is quite a big book if it hits your list. My other favorite is Memoirs of a Geisha by Authur Golden because I just loved the detailed descriptions of the kimonos, dress, and details.

    1. Hi Maggie,

I am glad you came over! I am planning to write more posts in English, so my English speaking friends can read it too!
Thank you for your recommendations, they went straight onto my list. I never heard of Betty Smith before, so this is exactly what I’m looking for. Memoirs of a Geisha … actually that too is what I am looking for, because I never considered reading it.
