Weil es gestern so heiß war, dass ich kaum denken konnte, habe ich mich einer Sache gewidmet, die mich schon lange geärgert hat: meine Leselampe im Schlafzimmer.

It’s very hot here in Germany at the moment, and yesterday it was too hot for me to do my brainy work. So I decided to fix something that’s been bothering me for quite some time now: my reading lamp in the bedroom.

Ich habe im Schlafzimmer neben dem Bett eine Stehlampe, natürlich von Ikea (Modell Lersta). Die Lampe an sich ist ok, sie ist nicht abstoßend hässlich, der Lampenschirm ist biegbar, also lässt sich das so hinrichten, wie ich es brauche, und der Schirm ist kein Plastik, schmilzt also auch bei 60-Watt-Birnen nicht weg.

Es stört mich aber, dass es eine Stehlampe ist. Das Ding nimmt am Boden Platz weg, am Lampenfuß fangen sich Staub und Haare (meine und die des Katers), und die Lampe insgesamt war krumm. Es musste also etwas passieren: Ich habe die Lampe einfach zur Wandleuchte umgebaut.

It’s an Ikea lamp, of course (the Lersta). It’s a perfectly acceptable lamp – the shade is metal, so it doesn’t melt if high wattage bulbs are used, it’s adjustable, and it’s not actively ugly. But I don’t like floor lamps anyway, and this one simply annoyed me, because the base takes up such a lot of space on the floor, and the whole lamp was a bit wonky anyway. Clearly, something had to be done – so I turned the floor lamp into a wall-mounted lamp. It’s a super easy DIY.

Die Zutaten:

Bohrmaschine, Wasserwaage, Schrauben, Dübel, Lochband, Seitenschneider (mit dem ich das Lochband nicht schneiden konnte, ich musste mir vom Nachbarn eine Blechschere leihen) und mein Akkuschrauber.

I needed my drill, water level, screws, wall plugs, and my cordless drill. I used a plastic-coated metal tape with holes (sorry, I don’t know the English word for it, feel free to enlighten me in the comments if you know it!). I thought I’d be able to cut it with my wire cutter, which didn’t work. Luckily my downstairs neighbour has a lot of tools and I borrowed his tin snips.

Der Fuß und ein Teil des, hm, Beines sind abnehmbar. Also habe ich Fuß und Unterschenkel der Lampe abgenommen, den Rest mit Lochband an der Wand befestigt und voilà, Wandlampe.

I simply detached the base and attached the rest to the wall. NBD.

Ich freue mich sehr, dass das so gut geklappt hat. Im Wohnzimmer habe ich nämlich dieselbe Lampe, mit der werde ich das genauso machen.

I’m very pleased with how this worked out, because I’ve got the same lamp in the living room, with the same issues. Now that I know how super-easy this is, I’ll amputate that other lamp’s leg, too!
